Katharina started working with children with special needs in 2003. She received a dual Master's degree in Special Education and Childhood Education and worked as a Special Ed teacher throughout NYC. During this time, she noticed her students success was strongly tied to language. Being in the classroom allowed Katharina to understand the child as a whole and a member of the community. This led to a deeper understanding on how to communicate with diverse and challenging populations.
Having worked with children with Apraxia, Autism Spectrum Disorder, PDD-NOS, FAS and Receptive - Expressive language disorders, she applied that knowledge during graduate school. In 2013, she graduated with an MA in Speech Language Pathology.
As an SLP, Katharina moved to California and worked throughout Santa Clara, Santa Cruz and Monterey county with populations ranging from 18 months - 94 years old. She evaluated and provided therapy for children and adults with a wide range of speech, language, fluency, voice and swallowing disorders. This was when Katharina and Vimal Shah - an engineer with K12 business and technology experience - had conversations around creating a Speech Therapy service.
With 15 years of experience working in a variety of settings, Katharina created Speech Pedals, a therapy company that would benefit the residents of California. Presently, Vimal handles all business / technology aspects of Speech Pedals allowing Katharina to focus on what's really important, the therapy. Katharina is nationally and state certified in the field of Speech Language Pathology. We are currently working with local schools as well as providing in-home speech therapy. Starting in July of 2018, we will open our office. Location to be posted soon!
“ Kati, you have done an excellent job with Leo. He has come out of his shell and blossomed with his speech. He has learned how to put more than one word together and how to express himself better. All thanks to your knowledge and help with this age group. You are a great therapist that knows exactly what she's talking about. You make parents feel comfortable by the way you share your knowledge and experience with us. Your therapy was awesome compared to others! ”
“ My family and I are very grateful and happy that you helped out our little guy to speak. We had tried everything and nothing worked. You have such a warm loving heart. My little guy sensed that about you, that made him open up to you. He adjusted to you and opened up and out of nowhere he started talking. We are forever thankful and grateful you came into our lives to help us out with our little guys speech. Thank you so much from the bottom of our hearts. ”
“ Your therapy is Fantastic! Thank you for the terrific service you provided for Finn. I filled out the survey but just want to add that Finn really enjoyed his time with you and he has benefited from receiving speech therapy from you! Have a great summer and I hope we can work with you again at Chartwell next year! ”
“ Your therapy has been wonderful and amazingly helpful. It is by far the best speech service we have ever received for Averie. She both enjoys learning and going, and is working very hard and making progress. Has been a joy to see as a parent. It's been a great experience all the way around. ”
“ We can see you love working with kids and we can see it right from the first session. You are compassionate, caring, and genuinely love teaching our son in every sessions we meet. Our son has been seeing you for almost a year and we believe he has made some really good progress and huge improvement. And that we thank you! We are definitely recommending you to any other parents out there in need of a speech therapist. ”
“ Your speech therapy helped my son a lot. When we started speech therapy for Bhargav, he was 2 years old and was only saying about 6 words. Now, 6 months later, he is almost repeating or trying to repeat all the words that I teach him. I think this example itself shows how much speech therapy helped him. What I really liked about you was the way you are so dedicated. You answered all my concerns, sent materials for further information, worked on your personal time too to answer my questions. And you were so energetic during the session, even though ours was almost last one of the day!!! I think you are doing a great job!!! ”
“ "It was a great pleasure for us that we found Katharina for my 10 year old son with ASD. My son always had a hard time in socialization, express his emotions/needs and thinking out of the box. Karharina helped him a lot in all areas of needs. Katharina is passionate in her field and enjoy working with children. It's really sad for us that she is leaving, I hope and pray that she come back soon. If she decides to start working privately i would love to pay out of my pocket as I have never found speech therapist like her....it's worth it. " ”
“ I felt very good and I can see that my grand daughter is getting the best. And I know and I can see the changes. I feel my grand daughter is getting the best teaching. ”
“ Your therapy has been an important part of her success and she very much enjoys her time with you. No real comparison to others, your 1:1 therapy is specialized and the progress is so obvious! ”
“ Bryce has improved at all levels in his speech. He can more clearly pronounce the
th sounds from the
f sounds. ”
